The Apple iMac G5/2.0 20-inch — The Computer Behind the Display

Released in August 2004, the Apple iMac G5 represented yet another dramatic reimagining of the iMac form factor. Where the iMac G4 had separated the display from the computer with an articulated arm, the iMac G5 placed everything — computer, display, speakers, and power supply — inside the display itself, creating an astonishingly thin all-in-one machine that appeared to be simply a monitor. At 5.1 cm thick, it was thinner than many CRT monitors of the era, while containing a fully capable desktop computer.

Engineering Achievement

Fitting a complete desktop computer into a 5 cm space was a genuine engineering challenge. Apple’s solution involved custom-designed circuit boards, a highly efficient cooling system, and the thermal characteristics of the PowerPC G5 processor — which ran cooler than Intel’s competing chips at the time. The 20-inch 1680×1050 LCD display was among the finest available in any computer, and the integrated speakers provided surprisingly capable audio for a system of this size.

The Intel Transition

The iMac G5 was the last iMac to use PowerPC processors before Apple’s transition to Intel chips in 2006. The 2.0 GHz G5 with 512 MB of RAM and an 250 GB hard drive represented the peak of PowerPC iMac performance. Its design directly foreshadowed the Intel iMac that replaced it — essentially identical in form factor but with Intel processors inside.
