The Atari 2600 Jr — Budget Atari for the NES Era

The Atari 2600 Jr, released in 1986 at $49.99, was Atari’s budget redesign of the classic console — slimmer and more modern-looking than the original wood-grain design but fully compatible with the entire 2600 cartridge library. Released at a time when Nintendo’s NES was rapidly dominating the market, the Jr targeted budget-conscious buyers and the substantial installed base of 2600 cartridge owners. Despite the NES’s overwhelming commercial advantage, the 2600 Jr found its audience and kept the platform commercially viable until Atari finally discontinued the line in 1992.
