The Nintendo 2DS — 3DS Without the 3D
The Nintendo 2DS, released in October 2013, was a budget variant of the Nintendo 3DS — removing the glasses-free 3D display and clamshell design in favour of a flat slate form factor at a lower price point. The 2DS played all 3DS and DS games and maintained full compatibility with the 3DS software library, making it an excellent entry-level device for younger children. Nintendo’s decision to release a non-folding device broke from its handheld tradition but proved commercially successful as a budget option that extended the 3DS platform’s reach to more price-sensitive consumers.
