The Bandai WonderSwan Color, released in Japan in December 2000, brought colour display capability to the WonderSwan platform — a 241-colour reflective LCD that significantly expanded the visual possibilities for WonderSwan software. Square’s commitment to the platform brought high-quality RPG titles including Final Fantasy ports and original games, giving the WonderSwan Color a software library that made it genuinely appealing to Japanese RPG enthusiasts. The WonderSwan Color sold well enough in Japan to justify the subsequent SwanCrystal, confirming that Gunpei Yokoi’s final hardware design had found a loyal audience.
