The NEC Turbo Express — PC Engine in Your Pocket
The NEC Turbo Express, released in North America in 1990 (as the PC Engine GT in Japan), was one of the most technically impressive handheld game consoles ever made — a fully portable PC Engine that played the same HuCard cartridges as the home console, delivering identical graphics and sound in a handheld form factor. Its 2.6-inch active-matrix LCD display was the finest handheld screen of its era, and the optional TV tuner accessory allowed it to receive television broadcasts. At $249.99 it was far more expensive than the Game Boy, and its battery life (approximately 3 hours) was poor by comparison, but the Turbo Express offered uncompromised PC Engine performance in a portable package.
