The Sega Genesis — The Console That Challenged Nintendo
The Sega Genesis (Mega Drive outside North America), launched in North America in August 1989, brought Nintendo its most serious competition during the 16-bit era. Using a Motorola 68000 processor at 7.67 MHz, the Genesis offered arcade-quality conversions and an aggressive ”Genesis does what Nintendon’t” marketing campaign. Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) became Sega’s defining mascot, Mortal Kombat’s uncensored blood gave it a mature gaming identity, and EA’s sports library established Madden NFL and FIFA on consoles. The Genesis sold approximately 30 million units — the only console to genuinely challenge Nintendo’s 16-bit market leadership.
