Acorn Electron Games — The Budget BBC Micro

The Acorn Electron, released in August 1983 at £199, was Acorn’s attempt to bring the BBC Micro’s capabilities to a lower price point — a home computer that maintained BBC BASIC compatibility while reducing hardware complexity and cost. Using the same 2 MHz MOS 6502A processor as the BBC Micro but with a custom ULA that combined several chips into one, the Electron offered broad software compatibility with the BBC Micro while being significantly cheaper to manufacture.

The Electron’s commercial history was troubled — severe supply shortages at launch meant that thousands of orders went unfulfilled during the critical Christmas 1983 period, damaging sales momentum that the machine never fully recovered. Despite this, the Electron developed a loyal following and a substantial software library, particularly after Acorn reduced the price significantly in 1984. Many BBC Micro games were ported to the Electron, and dedicated Electron-specific software continued to be published throughout the mid-1980s.
