Applied Technology MicroBee Games — Australia’s Own Computer
The Applied Technology MicroBee was Australia’s most successful domestically designed home computer — a Z80-based machine produced in Gosford, New South Wales from 1982 that achieved significant commercial success in the Australian educational market. The MicroBee’s built-in ROM containing BASIC and a word processor made it immediately useful, and its sturdy construction and reasonable price made it attractive to Australian schools implementing computing programmes throughout the mid-1980s.
The MicroBee’s software library was modest compared to international platforms but reflected the machine’s educational focus — games, programming tools, and educational software developed primarily by Australian publishers for the domestic market. The platform’s uniquely Australian character makes its software library a distinctive collector’s interest, representing a snapshot of Australian home computing culture that developed largely independently of the British and American mainstream.
