Atari ST Games — The MIDI Master’s Gaming Machine
The Atari ST, launched in June 1985 by Jack Tramiel’s revived Atari Corporation, was one of the most commercially successful 16-bit home computers — selling over 6 million units across its production life and dominating the European home computer market alongside the Commodore Amiga throughout the late 1980s. Using a Motorola 68000 processor at 8 MHz with the GEM graphical interface, the ST offered Mac-like computing at a fraction of the cost, and its built-in MIDI ports made it the dominant computer in professional music production for over a decade.
The ST’s game library was extensive and often excellent — developers who mastered the 68000 processor and the ST’s hardware produced games that compared favourably with arcade originals. Titles like Dungeon Master (1987, which defined the first-person dungeon crawler genre), Populous, Speedball 2, Turrican, and the Bitmap Brothers’ catalogue demonstrated the platform’s gaming capabilities. The ST version of games was often superior to PC versions of the era due to the 68000’s raw processing power compared to Intel’s 8088 and 286. In Germany particularly, the ST achieved enormous popularity and developed a thriving software scene that lasted well into the 1990s.
