MPT-03 and Compatible Games — Budget Pong-Era Consoles
The MPT-03 and its variants (Soundic MPT-03, Robdajet, and others) were budget game consoles produced in the late 1970s using General Instrument’s AY-3-8500 chip — the integrated circuit that enabled a wave of affordable Pong-style consoles to reach consumer markets worldwide. The AY-3-8500 contained all the circuitry needed for six different ball-and-paddle game variants on a single chip, enabling manufacturers to produce complete game consoles at minimal cost.
These budget consoles represent the very beginning of home gaming accessibility — machines that brought electronic entertainment to households that could not afford the more expensive cartridge-based systems. Sold under dozens of brand names across Europe and beyond, these Pong-derivative consoles were often the first electronic game many families owned, representing an important early chapter in the democratisation of interactive entertainment.
