Nintendo Game Boy Color Games — Colour Comes to Game Boy
The Nintendo Game Boy Color, launched in October 1998, brought colour to Nintendo’s handheld platform — a 32,768-colour display replacing the original Game Boy’s iconic green-tinted monochrome screen. Using an enhanced Z80 processor at 8 MHz (double the original Game Boy’s speed) with 32 KB of RAM, the GBC maintained full backwards compatibility with the original Game Boy library while supporting new GBC-exclusive titles that exploited the colour display and enhanced processing power.
The Game Boy Color’s most significant software contribution was Pokémon Gold and Silver (2000) — games that expanded the Pokémon universe with 100 new species, a day/night cycle, and two full regions to explore, selling over 23 million units. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons demonstrated original game design for the platform, while Pokémon Trading Card Game, Dragon Warrior Monsters, and Metal Gear Solid (a unique GBC adaptation) showed the breadth of the platform’s software. The GBC bridged the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance eras seamlessly.
