Oric-1 and Atmos Games — The Franco-British Computer
The Oric-1 and its successor the Oric Atmos were British home computers that achieved their greatest commercial success in France — a remarkable cross-Channel story where a machine designed in Britain became the dominant home computer in the French market. The Oric-1 (1983) and Atmos (1984), both using a 6502A processor at 1 MHz with the AY-3-8912 three-channel sound chip, offered genuine colour computing at competitive prices. The Atmos’s improved full-travel keyboard transformed user experience compared to the Oric-1’s rubber keys.
The Oric software library reflects this Franco-British character — many titles were published by French software houses for the significant French user base, alongside British releases. While smaller than the Spectrum or Commodore 64 libraries, Oric games often showed creative exploitation of the AY-3-8912 sound chip and the platform’s colour capabilities. Oric software is today among the rarer collectibles in European retro gaming, with complete boxed examples increasingly difficult to find outside France.
