Sony PlayStation Vita Games — The Underappreciated Handheld
The Sony PlayStation Vita, launched in Japan in December 2011 and worldwide in 2012, was Sony’s most technically advanced handheld — featuring a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, a 5-inch OLED touchscreen, dual analogue sticks, rear touchpad, and front and rear cameras in a beautifully crafted device that delivered near-PS3 quality gaming in handheld form. Despite its technical excellence, the Vita was a commercial disappointment, selling approximately 16 million units against the Nintendo 3DS’s 75 million.
The Vita’s commercial difficulties were partly self-inflicted — Sony’s expensive proprietary memory cards significantly increased the cost of ownership, and first-party software support dwindled after the first few years. The platform found its most passionate audience in Japan, where it became the preferred platform for visual novels, JRPGs, and niche titles that Western publishers ignored. Persona 4 Golden, Gravity Rush, Tearaway, and the extensive library of Japanese exclusives represent the Vita at its finest — a platform whose quality far exceeded its commercial success.
