Sega Game Gear Games — The Colour Handheld Challenger
The Sega Game Gear, launched in Japan in October 1990 and worldwide in 1991, was Sega’s direct response to Nintendo’s Game Boy — offering a backlit colour LCD display that the original Game Boy lacked, at the cost of significantly worse battery life (approximately 3-5 hours versus the Game Boy’s 15+). Technically the Game Gear was essentially a portable Sega Master System with an enhanced display, enabling straightforward ports of Master System games and giving it access to a substantial existing software library.
The Game Gear sold approximately 10 million units — creditable by most standards but far behind the Game Boy’s dominance. Its software library of around 400 titles includes strong Sonic the Hedgehog entries, excellent Master System ports, and original titles that exploited its colour capabilities. The Game Gear’s TV tuner accessory was a genuinely innovative peripheral that allowed it to receive television signals — an impressive feature for a handheld device of 1990. Despite losing the handheld war to Nintendo, the Game Gear remains fondly remembered.
