The Spectravideo SV-318 and SV-328 hold a unique place in computing history as the machines whose architecture directly inspired the creation of the MSX standard — the unified home computer specification that Microsoft and ASCII Corporation announced in June 1983. Spectravideo founder Harry Fox’s collaboration with ASCII’s Kay Nishi meant that the SV-318’s hardware choices (Z80 processor, TMS9918 video chip, AY-3-8910 sound) became the foundation of MSX. Every MSX computer ever made traces its architecture to decisions embodied in the SV-318.
The Spectravideo software library holds exceptional personal significance for this collection’s curator, Ari Tommiska, whose first computer was a Spectravideo — the machine that began a lifelong passion for computing that led to Finland’s largest private retro computer collection.
