Texas Instruments TI-99/4A Games — The 16-bit Home Computer
The Texas Instruments TI-99/4A, released in 1981, was the world’s first 16-bit home computer — using TI’s own TMS9900 processor at 3 MHz in a machine that competed directly with the Atari 8-bit computers and Commodore VIC-20. Despite its architectural sophistication, the TI-99/4A’s design compromises — particularly the slow memory bus and use of ROM-based modules for software — limited its practical performance. TI sold approximately 2.8 million units before exiting the home computer market in 1983, making it one of the more commercially significant early home computers.
The TI-99/4A’s software was primarily distributed on ROM cartridges — a premium format that was reliable and instant-loading but expensive compared to competitors’ cassette and disk software. The cartridge library includes strong educational titles (reflecting TI’s Speak & Spell heritage), action games, and the celebrated Speech Synthesiser-compatible titles that added spoken audio to gameplay. The TI-99/4A also supported a unique peripheral expansion system and floppy disk storage for more serious users. This collection spans the cartridge library that defined TI-99/4A gaming.
