Tiger Game.com Games — The Internet Handheld That Wasn’t
The Tiger Game.com, released in September 1997, was Tiger Electronics’ attempt to compete with the Nintendo Game Boy — a handheld featuring a touchscreen, built-in PDA features, and a promotional claim of internet connectivity that proved largely theoretical in practice. Using a 16 MHz processor with a 200×160 pixel LCD display, the Game.com offered basic gaming capability alongside an address book, calendar, and a modem accessory that could theoretically connect to the internet via a landline.
The Game.com’s software library was small and of inconsistent quality, and its commercial performance was modest. Tiger’s licensing agreements brought recognisable names including Resident Evil, Duke Nukem 3D, and Mortal Kombat to the platform, though the resulting games were far inferior to their source material given the hardware constraints. The Game.com is today a collector’s curiosity — an ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to add PDA and internet functionality to a handheld game device years before smartphones made such features standard.
