The Ericsson R380 — The World’s First Smartphone
The Ericsson R380, released in November 2000, was the world’s first device to be marketed as a ”smartphone” — combining a mobile phone with a PDA in a single device running Symbian OS. Its flip-down keypad revealed a touchscreen display running a suite of PDA applications including contacts, calendar, email, and web browsing. Though it could not run third-party applications, the R380’s combination of phone and PDA functionality in a single device defined the smartphone concept that Apple’s iPhone would perfect seven years later. The R380 is a historically significant device that belongs in any serious collection of portable computing history.
