The Nokia 7710 — Nokia’s Touchscreen Smartphone
The Nokia 7710, released in 2004, was Nokia’s first full touchscreen smartphone — a wide-format device with a 65,536-colour display running Series 90 (a touchscreen variant of Symbian OS). The 7710’s landscape orientation and large touchscreen anticipated the form factor that would later define smartphones, and its combination of phone, media player, web browser, and PDA functions in a touchscreen device showed Nokia’s awareness of where mobile computing was heading. Despite its innovative design, the 7710 was not commercially successful — its unusual form factor and Series 90’s limited app ecosystem limited its appeal compared to Nokia’s mainstream Series 60 devices.
