The PalmOne Tungsten T3 — Palm’s Widescreen Flagship
The PalmOne Tungsten T3, released in October 2003, was Palm’s most ambitious handheld of the era — featuring a sliding form factor that revealed a high-resolution 320×480 pixel widescreen display, the largest and most impressive screen on any Palm device to date. Running Palm OS 5.2.1 on an Intel XScale PXA255 at 400 MHz with 64 MB of RAM, the T3 delivered the fastest Palm OS performance available alongside a display that offered dramatically more screen real estate than the standard 320×320 displays of competing devices. The widescreen format was particularly valuable for document viewing, web browsing, and multimedia, and the Tungsten T3’s slider mechanism — extending the device to reveal the full display — was one of the most elegant hardware designs in Palm’s history. The T3 represented Palm’s high-water mark in handheld design before the company’s decline in the smartphone era.
