The Timex Data Link 150 — The Watch That Talks to Computers

The Timex Data Link 150 was a remarkable wristwatch that could receive data wirelessly from a computer screen — using a photosensor to read data transmitted as flashing bars on a PC monitor and storing contacts, appointments, and to-do items in the watch’s memory. Developed in collaboration with Microsoft and released in 1994, the Data Link was the world’s first watch to synchronise with PC software, anticipating the smartwatch concept by two decades. The technology was ingenious: the watch held up to the screen while a Windows program flashed the data at high speed, encoding information that the watch’s light sensor decoded and stored. Original Data Link watches in working condition are today collector’s pieces representing an extraordinary early attempt at wearable computing.
