The Xircom REX5000 — The PC Card PDA
The Xircom REX5000 was one of the most miniaturised computing devices ever produced — a complete personal organiser built into a standard PC Card (PCMCIA) form factor, designed to slide into a laptop’s card slot to synchronise data and then be carried separately as a credit card-sized PDA. The REX5000 stored contacts, calendar entries, to-do lists, and memos in a device measuring just 85.6 × 54 × 3.3mm — the standard credit card dimensions. Its e-paper-like reflective display required no backlight and no battery for display, lasting months on a single coin cell. The REX represented an extreme of miniaturisation that no subsequent device has matched, and it remains one of the most ingenious portable computing products ever designed.
