The Apple iBook G3/300 (Original Clamshell) — The Consumer Laptop Reinvented
Released in July 1999, the original Apple iBook was one of the most visually distinctive laptop computers ever made. Nicknamed the ”clamshell” for its rounded, hinged design, the iBook brought the colourful translucent aesthetic of the iMac G3 to the laptop market, targeting consumers and students who wanted a portable Mac at an accessible price. Designed by Jony Ive, the iBook was as much a fashion statement as a computer — and it sold spectacularly, helping revitalise Apple’s consumer laptop business.
Design
The clamshell iBook was available in Blueberry and Tangerine (later Graphite and Indigo), with a distinctive rounded shape quite unlike any laptop before it. The handle built into the body made it genuinely portable in a way that most laptops were not — you could carry it like a handbag. Inside the 300 MHz PowerPC G3 processor, 32 MB of RAM, and a 3.2 GB hard drive provided adequate performance for the consumer tasks it was designed for.
AirPort — Wireless Networking Pioneer
The original iBook was the first consumer laptop to offer optional built-in wireless networking — Apple’s AirPort, based on the 802.11b Wi-Fi standard. This was a genuinely revolutionary feature at the time, and Apple marketed it with a memorable demonstration of Steve Jobs walking across a stage while carrying an iBook, browsing the web wirelessly. The iBook played a significant role in establishing Wi-Fi as a mainstream consumer technology.
