The Apple iPad 2 (A1395) — The iPad Gets Cameras

Released in March 2011, the iPad 2 was a comprehensive upgrade over the original iPad that addressed its most significant limitations. The most notable additions were front and rear cameras, enabling FaceTime video calling and basic photography — features conspicuously absent from the first iPad. Combined with a faster Apple A5 dual-core processor, a thinner and lighter chassis, and a new gyroscope for improved gaming, the iPad 2 became an even more versatile device and sold in extraordinary numbers throughout its production life.

Thin and Light

At 8.8 mm thick and weighing 601 grams, the iPad 2 was 33% thinner than its predecessor — an achievement that required significant engineering effort given the addition of cameras and a more powerful processor. Apple’s custom A5 chip delivered roughly twice the CPU performance and nine times the GPU performance of the A4, making the iPad 2 substantially faster for graphics-intensive applications and games.

Smart Cover

The iPad 2 introduced the Smart Cover — a magnetic accessory that snapped to the iPad’s side, protected the screen, and could fold into a stand for typing or viewing. The Smart Cover’s elegant magnetic attachment mechanism became one of Apple’s most admired accessory designs and inspired numerous competitors.
