The Apple Macintosh PowerBook Duo 230 — The Ultralight Mac
Released in October 1992, the PowerBook Duo 230 was Apple’s ultralight laptop — a machine designed to be as thin and light as possible by eliminating all external ports except a proprietary Duo Dock connector. At 1.96 kg, it was significantly lighter than the standard PowerBook line, achieving this by omitting the floppy drive, Ethernet, serial ports, and SCSI — all accessible through an optional Duo Dock that transformed the laptop into a full desktop computer when required. The Duo Dock concept was decades ahead of its time, directly anticipating the modern laptop docking station systems used by business travellers worldwide today.
The Duo Dock System
The PowerBook Duo’s defining feature was the Duo Dock — a desktop enclosure into which the laptop slid like a cassette tape. Once docked, the Duo gained access to a full-size monitor, keyboard, mouse, floppy drive, hard drive, and all the ports of a standard Mac desktop. This gave users a genuinely practical dual-use machine: extreme portability on the road and full desktop functionality at the office. The one-second docking mechanism was elegant and satisfying to use, and the concept inspired Apple’s later MagSafe and iPad Pro Magic Keyboard designs.
The 33 MHz 68030
The Duo 230 used a 33 MHz Motorola 68030 processor — faster than the standard PowerBook 160 — giving it excellent performance for its size and weight. With 4 MB of RAM and a 120 MB hard drive, it ran System 7 comfortably and handled the full range of Mac professional applications. Its passive-matrix grayscale display offered the same 640×480 resolution as the standard PowerBook 160, making it a practical full-resolution portable despite its compact dimensions.
