The Nokia MikroMikko 3, introduced in 1987, was Nokia’s IBM PC AT-compatible desktop computer — the generation that brought 286-class processing and full AT compatibility to Finland’s domestic computer line. As the third major iteration of the MikroMikko platform (following the 8085-based originals), the MikroMikko 3 represented Nokia’s transition from proprietary computer architecture to the IBM PC-compatible standard that was rapidly becoming universal for business computing worldwide.
Nokia’s Computing Division
In the mid-1980s, Nokia was a diversified industrial conglomerate manufacturing cables, rubber products, televisions, and computers — quite different from the telecommunications company it would become in the 1990s. Nokia’s computer division had established the MikroMikko as the standard computer in Finnish businesses and government institutions. MikroMikko computers were the foundation of Nokia’s ”Tiimi” (Team) local area network system — a workgroup computing solution comprising MikroMikko workstations connected to MikroMikko servers running SQL/DMS database software and NOSS document management. This integrated network solution was popular in Finnish offices throughout the late 1980s, demonstrating that the MikroMikko was part of a comprehensive computing ecosystem designed specifically for Finnish business needs.
