The Minitel 1 (La Radiotechnique) — France’s Internet Terminal

The Minitel 1 produced by La Radiotechnique — a French subsidiary of Philips Electronics — was one of several manufacturers that produced terminals for France’s revolutionary Minitel videotex network. La Radiotechnique’s version was functionally identical to other Minitel 1 models, using the same Intel 8051 microcontroller, Thomson EF9340/EF9341 video chipset, and 1200/75 baud modem. The different manufacturer reflects the French government’s strategy of distributing production across multiple French electronics companies to support domestic industry.

Multiple Manufacturers — One Network

France Télécom’s strategy of distributing Minitel terminal production across multiple French manufacturers — including Alcatel, La Radiotechnique, and others — served both industrial policy goals and supply resilience. This approach meant that several technically identical but differently branded terminals from different manufacturers reached French homes, making the various manufacturer versions interesting distinctions for collectors today. The Computer Museum Ata holds both an Alcatel and a La Radiotechnique Minitel — a rare pairing that illustrates this multi-manufacturer strategy.

Philips in France

La Radiotechnique was Philips’s French manufacturing arm, established in 1919 and a significant employer in French electronics throughout the 20th century. Producing Minitel terminals was one of many consumer electronics products manufactured for the French market. The Minitel contract represented an important government-backed production order that helped sustain French electronics employment during a challenging period for the sector.
