The Sharp MZ-80B — The Professional Clean Computer
The Sharp MZ-80B, released in 1981, was the professional business variant of Sharp’s MZ-80 series — a more capable and better-equipped version of the MZ-80A that targeted the business and professional market with enhanced memory, improved disk capabilities, and a more comprehensive suite of business software. Like all MZ series machines, the MZ-80B maintained Sharp’s clean computer philosophy with no software in ROM, loading its operating system and applications from disk for maximum flexibility.
Business Computing in Japan
The MZ-80B arrived during a period of rapid growth in Japanese business computing. Japanese companies were increasingly adopting personal computers for accounting, word processing, and database management, and machines like the MZ-80B competed with NEC’s PC-8001 and Fujitsu’s FM-8 for the Japanese professional market. Sharp’s clean computer approach found particular favour with businesses that needed to run multiple types of software — the ability to load different operating systems from disk was practically valuable in environments where both CP/M business software and Japanese word processing applications might be required.
