The Toshiba HX-10 — Toshiba’s MSX Computer

The Toshiba HX-10 was Toshiba’s first-generation MSX home computer, released in 1983 as part of the initial wave of MSX machines from major Japanese electronics manufacturers. Using the standard MSX specification — Z80A processor at 3.58 MHz, TMS9918 video processor, AY-3-8910 sound chip, and 16 KB of RAM — the HX-10 brought Toshiba’s manufacturing quality and reliability to the home computer market. Toshiba’s participation in the MSX ecosystem reflected the standard’s strength in Japan, where it unified dozens of manufacturers behind a common platform.

Toshiba’s Electronics Heritage

Toshiba (Tokyo Shibaura Electric) was founded in 1939 through the merger of two companies dating back to 1875 and 1890, making it one of Japan’s oldest electronics companies. By 1983, Toshiba was a major diversified electronics manufacturer producing everything from consumer electronics to industrial equipment and semiconductors. The company’s expertise in electronics manufacturing gave its MSX computers a reputation for quality construction, and Toshiba would later become one of the most important manufacturers of laptop computers throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
