The Toshiba T3100 — The Orange Glow Laptop
The Toshiba T3100, released in 1986, was one of the most distinctive laptops of the 1980s — a premium 286-based machine featuring a gas plasma display that emitted its characteristic vivid orange glow rather than the grey LCD displays of most contemporaries. Using an Intel 80286 processor at 8 MHz with 640 KB of RAM and a built-in 10 MB hard drive, the T3100 offered AT-compatible performance with hard disk storage in a laptop format, targeting the high-end business market willing to pay a significant premium for the best available portable computing experience.
The Gas Plasma Display
The T3100’s gas plasma display produced text and graphics in vivid orange against black — a sharp, high-contrast display that was widely considered the finest available in a portable computer of the mid-1980s. Unlike the passive-matrix LCD displays of less expensive contemporaries, which suffered from poor viewing angles, ghosting, and low contrast, the plasma display provided crisp, clear output readable in virtually any lighting condition. The display’s orange glow became an iconic visual signature of premium 1980s portable computing, instantly recognisable and fondly remembered by professionals who used these machines.
