The Atari Lynx II — The Refined Colour Handheld
The Atari Lynx II (1991) was a redesigned version of the original Lynx — smaller, lighter, and more ergonomic while maintaining the same impressive hardware including hardware scaling and rotation capabilities that the Game Boy could not match. The Lynx’s technical superiority — colour backlit display, hardware sprite scaling, networking support — never translated into commercial success against Nintendo’s dominant Game Boy. Atari discontinued the Lynx in 1995 after approximately 3 million units sold. Today the Lynx II and its software library are fondly remembered as a technically impressive platform that deserved better than its commercial fate.
