The Atari Home Pong — Where Home Gaming Began

The Atari Home Pong (1975) created the home video game industry. While the Magnavox Odyssey (1972) was technically the first home console, it was Atari’s Pong — sold through Sears as the ”Tele-Games Pong” — that demonstrated the mass market potential of home gaming. Selling 150,000 units in its first Christmas season, Home Pong sparked a wave of imitators and established the template for the industry that would follow. Every home console from the Atari 2600 to the PlayStation 5 owes its commercial existence to the market that this simple ball-and-paddle game created in 1975.
