The Bandai Pippin @World — Apple’s Failed Game Console
The Bandai Pippin @World, released in North America in 1996 at $599, was one of the most commercially unsuccessful game consoles ever produced — a multimedia platform based on Apple’s PowerPC technology running a modified Mac OS. Developed through an Apple licensing agreement with Bandai, the Pippin was positioned as both a game console and an internet appliance. The combination of high price, fewer than 100 titles, and the imminent arrival of PlayStation and Nintendo 64 resulted in fewer than 100,000 units sold worldwide. The Pippin @World is today one of the rarest and most sought-after game consoles — its commercial failure means few were sold, making surviving complete examples genuinely scarce.
