The C64 DTV — The Commodore 64 in a Joystick
The Commodore 64 Direct-to-TV (C64 DTV), released in 2004, was a remarkable piece of engineering — a fully functional Commodore 64 computer built into a joystick housing, containing 30 built-in games and connecting directly to a television. Designed by Jeri Ellsworth, who had taught herself chip design, the DTV used a single custom chip replicating the entire C64 hardware including the 6510 processor, VIC-II graphics chip, and SID sound chip. The DTV was commercially sold as a plug-and-play toy but became a collector’s favourite when hackers discovered it could be modified with a keyboard and disk drive to function as a complete, fully compatible C64 computer.
