The CBS ColecoVision — Arcade Quality at Home
The ColecoVision, released in August 1982 and distributed in Europe by CBS Electronics, was one of the most technically impressive home game consoles of its era — delivering near-arcade-quality versions of popular games through its Z80A processor and TMS9928A video chip. Its launch title Donkey Kong was widely considered the best home version of the arcade original, and the console sold over 2 million units before the 1983-1984 video game crash ended its commercial life. The CBS branding reflects the European distribution arrangement that gave the console strong retail presence in Europe, where it was often better known as the ”CBS ColecoVision” than by the American Coleco name.
