The Commodore 64 Game System — C64 Without the Computer

The Commodore 64 Game System (C64 GS), released in 1990, was Commodore’s attempt to compete with the Nintendo NES and Sega Master System by producing a controller-only version of the Commodore 64 — removing the keyboard and presenting the C64 hardware as a pure game console. Using standard C64 cartridges and offering the same SID sound and VIC-II graphics that had made the C64 a gaming powerhouse, the GS theoretically offered access to a vast software library. However, most C64 software was keyboard-dependent, and the dedicated game cartridge library was small. The GS sold poorly and was discontinued quickly, making it a rare collector’s piece today.
