The Commodore CDTV — Multimedia Before Its Time

The Commodore CDTV (Commodore Dynamic Total Vision), released in 1991, was an ambitious multimedia device combining an Amiga 500 computer with a CD-ROM drive in a hi-fi component form factor designed to sit alongside a stereo system. Positioned as a multimedia entertainment centre rather than a computer or game console, the CDTV could play audio CDs, CD+G karaoke discs, and interactive CD-ROM software using an infrared remote control. Its pricing at $999 and limited software library prevented commercial success, but the CDTV anticipated the multimedia PC and interactive television concepts that would become mainstream a decade later.
