The Goldstar 3DO — Korea’s 3DO

The Goldstar 3DO was one of several manufacturers’ implementations of the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer standard — produced by Goldstar (now LG Electronics) of South Korea. The 3DO was an open hardware standard conceived by Trip Hawkins of Electronic Arts, allowing multiple manufacturers to produce compatible hardware. Despite the 3DO’s commercial failure — its $699 launch price and limited software library were decisive disadvantages against Sony’s PlayStation — the Goldstar variant is today a notable collector’s piece representing both the 3DO platform and South Korea’s early participation in the home console market.
