The KC Intelligent Terminal — East German Computing
The KC (Kleincomputer) series was a family of home computers produced in East Germany by VEB Mikroelektronik ”Wilhelm Pieck” Mühlhausen — the state-owned electronics enterprise responsible for personal computing in the German Democratic Republic. The KC machines used a U880 processor, which was East Germany’s reverse-engineered clone of the Zilog Z80, and ran a variety of operating systems and BASIC interpreters. The KC series represents the computing culture of the Eastern Bloc — state-planned consumer electronics that brought personal computing to East German homes and schools despite the constraints of the planned economy and Western technology embargoes.
