The Mattel Intellivision — The Sports Console
The Mattel Intellivision, launched in 1979, was the first serious competitor to the Atari 2600 — offering noticeably superior graphics and sound through its General Instrument CP1610 processor. Mattel’s aggressive television advertising compared Intellivision games side-by-side with Atari 2600 versions, generally favouring the Intellivision’s more detailed visuals. The console was particularly celebrated for its sports titles — officially licensed NFL Football, MLB Baseball, NBA Basketball, and NHL Hockey games that were the definitive home sports simulations of the early 1980s. The unique disc controller allowed nuanced directional input well-suited to sports games. The Intellivision sold approximately 3 million units and remains fondly remembered for its software quality.
