Mattel Soccer was a handheld electronic sports game from Mattel Electronics — part of the pioneering series of LED handheld games that Mattel produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Mattel’s Football (1977) was the first handheld electronic game to use an LED display for action gameplay, and the subsequent sports series including Soccer brought the same formula to other sports. These Mattel LED handhelds were enormously popular, introducing millions of people to portable electronic gaming before dedicated game consoles and LCD handhelds became the dominant format. Original Mattel LED sports games in working condition are today classic collector’s pieces.
