The NEC PC-FX — NEC’s Final Console

The NEC PC-FX, released in Japan in December 1994, was NEC’s final game console and one of the most unusual fifth-generation systems — a tower-shaped PC-like design using a 32-bit NEC V810 processor at 21.5 MHz. The PC-FX was notable for its exceptional full motion video capabilities, able to display multiple simultaneous MPEG video streams, but its 2D-only graphics architecture made it unable to produce the 3D graphics that PlayStation and Saturn were pioneering. Released only in Japan with a library of approximately 62 titles — primarily visual novels and anime-themed games — the PC-FX is today a rare collector’s piece representing NEC’s farewell to console gaming.
