The NEC TurboGrafx-16 — PC Engine for North America
The NEC TurboGrafx-16, released in North America in August 1989, was the North American version of the PC Engine — renamed and redesigned for the American market where NEC and Hudson Soft hoped to challenge Sega and Nintendo. Despite technically impressive hardware and a strong Japanese software library to draw from, the TurboGrafx-16 struggled commercially in North America, where Nintendo’s NES had established overwhelming dominance and the Sega Genesis was emerging as a credible challenger. Its library included outstanding titles like Bonk’s Adventure, Blazing Lazers, and the CD-ROM games, and the platform developed a dedicated following that persists strongly among collectors today.
