The Nintendo Famicom — The Console That Saved Gaming
The Nintendo Family Computer (Famicom), released in Japan on 15 July 1983, was the console that rescued the video game industry after the catastrophic 1983-1984 crash had devastated Atari and most American game publishers. Under Hiroshi Yamauchi’s leadership and with hardware designed by Masayuki Uemura, Nintendo created strict quality licensing controls that prevented the flood of poor-quality games that had destroyed consumer confidence. The Famicom used a custom Ricoh 2A03 processor at 1.79 MHz and sold over 60 million units in Japan and worldwide as the NES. Its library — Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania — established franchises that remain among the most valuable in entertainment history.
