The Nintendo Game Boy Color — Colour Comes to Game Boy
The Nintendo Game Boy Color, launched in October 1998, brought colour to Nintendo’s handheld platform — a 32,768-colour display replacing the original Game Boy’s green-tinted monochrome screen. Using an enhanced Z80 processor at 8 MHz with full backwards compatibility with the original Game Boy library, the GBC supported new Color-exclusive titles that exploited the colour display and improved processing. Pokémon Gold and Silver (2000) sold over 23 million units and remains one of the finest Pokémon games ever made. The GBC bridged the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance eras seamlessly, offering a meaningful upgrade while preserving access to the original platform’s enormous software library.
