The Nintendo Game Boy Light, released in Japan in April 1998, was a Japan-only variant of the Game Boy Pocket featuring an electroluminescent backlit display — the first Nintendo handheld with a built-in light for playing in dark environments. Released just months before the Game Boy Color rendered it obsolete, the Game Boy Light sold only in Japan and for a very brief period, making it one of the rarest mainstream Nintendo handhelds.
