The Nintendo Wii U — The Misunderstood Console

The Nintendo Wii U, launched in November 2012, was Nintendo’s first HD home console — featuring a GamePad controller with a built-in touchscreen that enabled asymmetric gameplay and off-TV play. Despite innovative features and an outstanding software library including Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (released simultaneously on Switch), Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, and Splatoon, the Wii U sold only approximately 13.5 million units — Nintendo’s worst-selling home console. Consumer confusion about whether the GamePad was a standalone device or an add-on to the original Wii, combined with weak third-party support, limited its commercial reach. Many of its finest games were later ported to the Nintendo Switch, retroactively validating the Wii U’s software quality.
