The Nokia N-Gage QD — The Redesigned N-Gage

The Nokia N-Gage QD, released in May 2004, was a redesigned version of the original N-Gage that addressed its predecessor’s most criticised design flaws — moving the earpiece to a more natural position for phone calls and allowing game card changes without removing the battery. The QD (Quick Dial) name reflected the improved phone functionality, and the redesigned form factor was more ergonomic for both gaming and calling. However, the QD removed Bluetooth multiplayer and MP3 playback present in the original, and the platform’s limited game library and Game Boy Advance competition continued to constrain its commercial success. The N-Gage QD represents Nokia’s determination to compete in the gaming handheld market — a Finnish perspective on the portable gaming landscape of the mid-2000s.
