The Sega Game Gear — The Colour Handheld Challenger

The Sega Game Gear, launched in October 1990, featured a backlit colour display that made the Game Boy’s monochrome screen look primitive by comparison. Hardware related to the Master System allowed Game Gear to play Master System games with an adapter, and its 363-title library included excellent Sonic, Mortal Kombat, and sports titles. Despite technical advantages, the battery consumption — six AA batteries lasting approximately 3-5 hours versus the Game Boy’s 15+ hours — proved decisive. The Game Gear sold approximately 10.6 million units — impressive but unable to challenge Nintendo’s dominant Game Boy.
