The Sega Genesis 2 — The Redesigned Genesis

The Sega Genesis 2 (Mega Drive 2 outside North America), released in 1993, was a redesigned, smaller version of the original Genesis at a lower price point — featuring a more compact form factor and a new six-button controller as standard. The Genesis 2 arrived as the Super Nintendo was gaining momentum and Sega needed to maintain price competitiveness. The redesign removed the headphone jack and volume control of the original but introduced the standard six-button layout that fighting games like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat required. The Genesis 2 became the most common Sega hardware configuration of the mid-1990s.
